The Department of Early Childhood Surgery with Congenital Heart Disease
The Department of Early Childhood Surgery (DEC) with congenital heart disease (CHD) was created on July 5, 1965, on the base of the CHD department of Cardiovascular Surgery Institute of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences . In different years, the department was headed by B.A. Konstantinov, L.A. Buzinova, G.I. Alekseev, G.E. Falkovsky, M.A. Zelenikin and since 2015 - M.M. Zelenikin.

The main department activity is surgical treatment of CHD in early aged children, including complex intracardiac anomalies required a multi-stage correction: patent ductus arteriosus, coarctation of the aorta, septal defects (ASD, VSD), conotruncal malformations (pulmonary atresia, transposition of the great vessels, double outlet right ventricle), valve pathology.
A special place gives to patients with a functional single heart ventricle, they are undergone stage hemodynamic correction. The department has extensive experience of such interventions. Patients with CHD, combined with moderate right ventricular hypoplasia, are undergone a one-and-a-half ventricular correction. The complex CHD surgery has problem in reoperation interventions, often associated with a combination of pulmonary artery valve restenosis and its insufficiency. The department has developed and introduced a method for such conditions correction.
It consists in the biological prosthesis (pulmonary allograft) implantation into an orthotopic position. Such technique with biological prosthesis using have proved itselves. It is characterized by satisfactory immediate and long-term results. Thus, the department has performed more than 11,000 heart operations. The great attention is paid to the cosmetic effect. The department has developed a variety of mini-invasive heart approach (Y-shaped incision) for CPB operations.

Diagnostic and treatment methods improvement made possible to reduce the incidence of complications and adverse outcomes. In particular, the prophylactic method of hydropericardium in patients after heart surgery practically excluded the probability of this complication in the early postoperative period.

After “open-heart” surgery patients are observed in the ICU and then transferred to the intensive care ward in the department, which is equipped with modern devices for the vital functions monitoring.

The department is engaged in active scientific work in addition to the medical. Over the past 10 years, More than 200 scientific works have been published, 5 doctoral and 6 candidate dissertations have been confirmed, 4 patents for inventions and utility models have been received. Department staff regularly takes part in scientific events , incl. with international participation.
