Our Center is powerful scientific base and carries out postgraduate training of the medical staff. Education program is under the supervision of the Center’s leading specialists. The extensive clinical base and high scientific potential of Bakoulev CCVS RAMS allow trained to receive one of the best formations in the field of cardiovascular surgery and adjacent specialties. As medical and surgical technology evolves, physicians in the field of cardiovascular surgery and adjacent specialties need an increasingly complex skill set. Educational programs of Bakoulev CCVS traditionally produce physicians who are educated, thoroughly knowledgeable, and trained in the most advanced technological approaches necessary to compete in today’s environment.
The goal of the two-year initial residency program at Bakoulev CCVS RAMS is to train specialists who will have the opportunity and ability to become highly educated practitioners. We expect all trainees to finish the residency with a broad basic understanding of cardiovascular physiology and disease and with technical expertise in this specialty.
Emphasis during the first year of initial residency is on diagnosis, preoperative and postoperative care, and acquisition of basic surgical skills and operative experience. One first year initial residents rotate at the Center’s 15 departments, laboratories, and operating rooms unit, participating in the operations performed on the service and carrying out operative procedures commensurate with training. The Center’s library and archive are accessible to all trained. Since 2002, on the initiative of Leo A. Bockeria, the Department for Training and Continuous Education together with Telemedicine Education Department performs for trained teletranslations from operating rooms unit. The further development of this direction concerning other, adjacent disciplines with cardiovascular surgery is supposed. Traditionally, on Saturdays, leading scientists of the Center read for 1-st year initial residents and aspirants (post-graduated students) the lectures on cardiovascular surgery and adjacent disciplines. The subject of lectures is constantly updated.
The leading specialists of the departments spent regular work on profile sections. It includes analysis of clinical cases, advisory colloquiums during training, reading of additional thematic lectures, carrying out of seminars, etc.
The great value is given to reception of additional knowledge on related subjects, especially on intensive care, therefore with 2002 first year initial residents study basic skills of intensive cardiac care within 2 months. All initial residents pass the second year of training in three profile Departments and also in Intensive Care Unit (each for 3 months).
Postgraduate students (Aspirants) of all specialties also are trained in Intensive Care Unit all first year. After the interview (examination) at the end of one year training in Intensive Care Unit they can be available to continue education in profile departments. It undoubtedly allows raising a level of knowledge and qualification of the future specialist.
At the end of first and second year of training initial residents sit for an examination with participation of the head of a department and the main specialists. The chairman of examination board is the Center’s Director. At the end of academic year certification of all initial residents, a post-graduate and doctoral students with participation of heads of all Center Departments is held.
