Center’s Museums: anatomy and history of cardiovascular surgery
A.N. Bakulev Center’s Museum of cardiovascular surgery celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023. The Museum is a cultural, educational, scientific and research link in a wide chain of A.N. Bakulev Center’s different directions of activities.
Unique books and documents, photos, everyday objects of Museum founders, surgical equipment and instruments are presented in the Museum’s collection. The permanent exposition counts more than 3,500 items, each of which is an inherent part of a glorious Center’s history.
More than a thousand of Russian and foreign specialists, schoolchildren and students, patients, members of Russian and international delegations visit the Museum annually. Museum workers conduct scientific and research, educational, medical and preventive activities, carry out historical medical studies and museum surveys.
Participants of further education courses, residents and postgraduate students study at the premises of the Museum.
The Museum collection includes unique A.N. Bakulev and V.I. Burakovsky’s manuscripts, operation reports inscribed by V.P. Demikhov and N.K. Galankin, collection of mechanical heart valves (1951 – 2000), the operating table at which A.N. Bakulev and E.N. Meshalkin operated (1956), heart-lung machine constructed by S.S. Bryukhonenko (1957), 120 cardiac pacemakers (1962 – 2005), collection of medals and badges devoted to cardiology, surgery of heart and vessels. One of the Museum’s recent acquisitions – collection of commemorative medals and badges donated by Academician of RAMS M.I. Kuzin, L.N. Sidarenko’s personal things, a set of surgical needles dated the end of XIX century donated to the Museum by Academician of RAMS M.I. Perelman.

Anatomic Museum of heart and vessels – is a scientific, educational and research Department as a part of A.N. Bakulev Center’s Museum of History of cardiovascular surgery. Each item is a clinicopathological observation, including information about the patient, disease history data and conducted intravital studies, name of the performed operation, causes of death, macro- and microphotographs of the specimen in several projections, morphometry of cardiac structures. The collection is based on the segmental structure of the heart.
