Scientific activity of the department
The department was founded 1 March 1999.

Main directions of clinical work

The main task of the division is the development and implementation of directions of elective and emergency surgical care for newborns and infants. Among them:

  • CHD minimally invasive surgery;
  • hemodynamic correction of complex CHD;
  • development of myocardium protection and cardiopulmonary bypass methods;
  • implementation of modern high-quality and less traumatic methods of CHD diagnostics;
  • surgical treatment of cardiac valve pathology in infants;
  • use of cell technologies in cardiosurgery in patients with critical decrease of heart pump function associated with CHD (anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary trunk (BWGS), Ebstein’s anomaly, cardiomyopathies and others);
  • use of hybrid surgery for treatment of critical congenital heart diseases;
  • simultaneous repair of intra- and extra-cardiac pathology in infants;
  • surgical treatment of rhythm disorders in infants;
  • supplementary methods of circulation in treatment of AHF;
  • reconstructive staged surgery in newborns with complex CHD;
  • valve-sparing surgery for right ventricle obstructive pathology (Fallot's tetralogy, double outlet right ventricle);
  • artificial intelligence use in diagnostic and treatment patterns.

Types of operations developped and implemented in the department

The department pioneered the implementation of minimally invasive technologies for CHD treatment:

  • thoracoscopic (performed without incision) and endovascular (transvascular) repair of patent ductus arteriosus;
  • septal defects closure through mini-access;
  • seamless repair of the interatrial and interventricular septal defects with occluders;
  • mini-incision in typical operations, etc.
The department was one of the first departments in Russia to put into large-scale practice stenting of the patent ductus arteriosus and hybrid interventions for critical ductus-dependent CHD. A significant part of the most difficult to correct CHD - transposition of the main arteries, hypoplastic syndrome of the left heart, common open atrioventricular canal, Fallot’s tetralogy, etc. - are the most important components of the department's work.

Statistics

For a quarter of a century of the department’ existence, its surgeons performed about 10,000 operations, almost 6,000 of which were performed under cardiopulmonary bypass. The accumulated experience and the steady improvement in the quality of services provided have made it possible to achieve a steady downward trend in the number of complications over the past years with a recorded mortality rate of less than 1% in 2021 and zero mortality in endovascular interventions in 2021 and 2022. Last year, 537 children were hospitalized to the department, 303 operations were performed, 187 of which were with cardiopulmonary bypass. More than 90% of operated patients are newborns and infants.

Conditions of staying in the department

The department hospitalizes patients around the clock from any region of Russia, neighboring countries and beyond and has separate wards with comfortable conditions for the co-staying of children and their parents. The department has 4 highest category doctors, experienced surgeons and cardiologists. Young patients are cared for only by nurses with extensive experience. During the period of hospitalization, accompanying people are provided with 3 meals a day and conditions for maintaining personal hygiene, including separate showers and WCs. There is a specially allocated room in the department as a place for meals for accompanying people and is equipped with necessary household appliances (fridge, electric kettle, microwave oven). All wards are equipped with beds.

Scientific activity of the department

The department staff defended 4 doctoral and dozens of master's theses and published hundreds of publications. The first in Russia national educational project-school CV Pediatric Train was initiated and carried out with the involvement of leading national and foreign experts, and annual meetings of the neonatal section of the Russian Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons were organized with the direct involvement of the doctors of the department. The department is an active participant in the Sessions and Congresses of A.N. Bakulev NMRC CVS, as well as one of the organizers of the All-Russian Congress of Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons and Specialists in Congenital Heart Diseases with international participation.
