What we treat
Department staff
The Department of vein pathology and microvascular surgery was founded in 2003. More than 5 thousand patients with vein and lymphatic pathology have been treated and operated on (600 of them on the lymphatic system and almost 4,5 thousand on veins). They have been operated on with zero mortality for the whole period of the department’s work.

Main directions of clinical work

The main tasks of the Department of vein pathology and microvascular surgery are:

  • Complex examination and making a diagnosis to the patients, suffering from congenital and acquired diseases of great veins and lymphatic vessels.

  • Development of treatment strategy and surgical repair of vein and lymphatic pathology.

  • Scientific – clinical research in the field of phlebology and lymphology as branches of medicine.

  • Development and implementation of new methods of phlebo-lymphology surgical treatment in clinical practice.

A full range of operations on veins for compression stenoses and aneurisms, Padget’s syndrome, deforming forms of elephantiasis, post-thrombophlebotic syndrome, varicocele and other diseases are performed in the department.

Speciality

Lymphatic drainage operations in patients with complicated lymphedema forms – a disease presenting itself as a limb swelling and associated with disorder of lympha outflow by lymphatic vessels. The essence of lymphatic drainage operation is to connect the lymphatic vessel and the vein which is lower than the block of lymphatic outflow. It allows to throw excess lymph into the venous channel. A large number of methods for creating a lymphovenous anastomosis is known, but they all require the use of suture material.

The method, patented in the department, assumes the innovative solution: the lymphatic vessel is connected with the vein without the use of suture material due to the fixing properties of connective tissues of the outer vein coat. The advantages of the method are the relative operation simplicity, minimal injury for the lymphatic vessel, the absence of suture material between the lymphatic vessel and the venous wall.

Statistics

522 patients were treated and 467 operations were performed in the Department of vein pathology and microvascular surgery in 2022.
