Sphere of scientific and practical interests

Professor Podzolkov developed the most important areas of children’s thoracic surgery. He paid special attention to the development and implementation into clinical practice of new optimal methods of repair of complex congenital heart defects, which were previously considered inoperable. He performed a number of operations on the heart and blood vessels for the first time in Russia and in the world.

He was the first in the world practice to develop and successfully implement in the clinic a fundamentally new approach to the surgical treatment of complex defects in criss-cross syndrome. He performed the first operations in adult patients with congenital heart defects combined with coronary artery disease.

Scientific activity

The author and co-author of more than 850 scientific papers, including 24 monographs published in Russian and foreign editions. 27 PhD theses and 75 MD theses were defended under his guidance.

Professor Podzolkov actively promotes the achievements of Russian scientists abroad. He has repeatedly presented reports on the issues of surgical treatment of complex congenital heart defects at symposiums, conferences, congresses in the USA, Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, France, India and Finland since 1976.

Personal achievements

Awardee of the USSR State Prize, Honored Scientist of the RF. He was awarded the orders «Badge of Honor», «Friendship», «Merit for the Fatherland» IV degree, Alexander Nevsky order, medals, and other badges of merit.
